Three days, 70 kilometres, 100 participants. The students of the Károly Kratochvil Honvéd Secondary School joined the “Don Heroes Memorial March” again this year to pay tribute to the Hungarian soldiers of World War II.

Participants of the 25th “Don Heroes Memorial March” lined up at the Honvéd Cemetery in full marching gear. Some arrived in World War II uniforms, but most wore winter training gear. Of the 100 participants of the Hajdú Marching Squadron, 80 are students of the Kratochvil Károly Honvéd Secondary School. “I can say on behalf of all of us that we are a very cohesive team. We can motivate each other despite all kinds of external influences,” Roland Ráti said. The students of the Kratochvil Honvéd Secondary School have been regular participants in the national action for more than a decade. In the institution, the memory of military heroes is given special emphasis in patriotic and national defense education.

“Here we are carrying out a physical march, which we can say is also a pilgrimage, since we can commemorate the Don heroes in a worthy way, pay tribute with our achievements to their memory, to their courage, and their willingness to sacrifice,” the Commander of the Marching Squadron,” József Szendi, pointed out. The Marching Squadron has always started from the schoolyard, but the 25th memorial tour began in the Honvéd Cemetery at the plot where the Hungarian soldiers who fell in World War II are buried.

Deputy Mayor István Puskás said in his speech, “One of the most important tasks of the current students is to preserve peace. I think we all share the same thought that the most important goal of this remembrance and keeping it in the present is that something like this should never happen again, neither to Hungarian soldiers nor, if possible, to anyone in the world.”

The participants in the memorial tour cover 22-25 kilometers every day. They will reach their destination, Hajdúnánás, on Saturday afternoon.
