The Municipality of Debrecen City with County Rights places great emphasis on the management and care that ensures the preservation and development of the city’s tree population. The Green Codex states as a fundamental principle and objective the preservation and reconstruction of alleys that are valuable from a cityscape and urban ecology perspective, and the maintenance of “eternal lines of trees”.

In addition to new plantings, we continue to pay great attention to the protection of existing trees and the preservation of the green urban fabric with measures such as the PERMANENT TREE ALLEYS – Debrecen STREET PLANTING and tree-line reconstruction programme.

There are characteristic and old alleys on many streets of Debrecen, which we take great care of. We continuously monitor and examine the city’s tree population and alleys, and tree treatments are carried out according to a plan and schedule.

The autumn-winter-early spring period, outside the nesting season of birds, is excellent for carrying out system-level tree care work, accordingly, the pruning of Puzdra, Péchy, Szentgyörgyi Streets has already been completed, and this week professional pruning works have begun on Hatvan Street, in parallel with this, the work on Esze Tamás Street will be completed, and on Thursday, tree care works with a lifting platform vehicle began on Kétmalom Street. The works are carried out by specialist contractors, under the supervision of specialists from the Green Space Department. Komlóssy and Bessenyei Streets are also affected by the tree care works in question. The works on Komlóssy Street are also scheduled to be completed during the week, after which the specialist contractor will continue to carry out the works on the neighbouring Bessenyei Street in the coming days.

By continuously maintaining and replacing alleys, greener streets, healthier lines of trees, a more livable living environment, and sustainable urban development are achieved, and by ensuring the continuous vegetation cover of city streets, “eternal lines of trees” can be created so that they will be preserved for generations to come.

Taking care of the management of old trees is also of paramount importance because over the past decades, these trees have created green areas of such a size that their canopy has a significant dust-filtering and pollutant-binding capacity, while also producing oxygen, and thanks to their shade and evaporation, a cooler and therefore more tolerable microclimate is characteristic of their surroundings in the summer heat. Alleys are an important tool for reducing the urban heat island effect and are therefore an indispensable part of the urban environment.
