“Besides the capital, Debrecen is the biggest winner of the boom in international tourism,” Zoltán Guller told Index.

The president of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (In Hungarian abbreviated as MTÜ) added that, thanks to the continuous investments taking place in our rural cities, the business tourism segment is expanding beyond the capital.

“For example, Debrecen and its region have stood out from the rest in this area: the number of tourists arriving here for business purposes has also increased significantly in the past year. This is partly due to the fact that the number of foreign guest nights in the “cívis” city has increased by nearly 22 percent annually, which even exceeded the 15 percent growth rate of the capital,” he highlighted.

Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, Diána Széles who is also responsible for tourism, responded to the Index interview on her Facebook page, confirming that the number of tourists arriving in Debrecen for business purposes has increased significantly thanks to economic development.

As she writes, the successes achieved in the tourism sector, provide a livelihood for thousands of Debrecen residents.

“We are constantly working with the government to find solutions to the problems reported to us, which is why the government is supporting the tourism sector with additional measures. By establishing the tourism bank it plans, it will help small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the tourism sector grow and maintain their competitiveness, and thus even entrepreneurs in Debrecen,” her post reads.
