The Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Debrecen offers a competitive, ten-semester, postgraduate degree in dentistry, a globally recognised dental degree and excellent career opportunities for those interested in dentistry. Its popularity is undiminished, as demonstrated by the high number of applicants. Practice-oriented teaching is provided in small groups in the upper grades, using the latest techniques and digital tools.
The faculty building also houses almost 70 treatment units, modern lecture and seminar rooms, a special CAD/CAM classroom, a technologically advanced Phantom room and a dental laboratory. Some of the treatment units were upgraded in the summer of 2024, along with a modernisation of the mechanical system. Eight dental simulators provide the faculty with additional opportunities for practice-oriented training, which is a major focus. The infrastructure and curricula of the institution are constantly evolving and developing in line with advances in technology and health sciences.
“The management of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen has always considered it important to develop an educational theme in line with international standards, to create a safe practice environment, to develop skills and at the same time to ensure objective evaluation in dental education,” the Dean of the Faculty emphasised.
Kinga Bágyi said, “In the fourth and fifth years, students work in patient care under the supervision of a specialist doctor, so in addition to theoretical knowledge, they also gain experience by practicing on real patients, which is essential for them.”
The diploma, acquired at Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen, gives graduates the right to work independently in Hungary, and is accepted in the European Union, while in other countries it can be used to practise the profession after a differential examination.
The number of students at the faculty has stabilised over the last ten years or so, with a total of 600-700 foreign and Hungarian students.
“Launching in September 2024, our six-semester digital dental design bachelor’s degree is a niche in today’s digital revolution. Graduates will be able to help dentists and dental technicians with computer-aided design and manufacturing processes, especially in prosthodontics, orthodontics and implantology,” the Dean said.
In addition to their studies, the faculty’s students will also have the opportunity to get involved in the academic world, participating in the local Scientific Student Conference, from which the best students will be able to go on to the national competition.
And for graduates interested in science, the country’s only Doctoral School of Dentistry, (abbreviated as FODI in Hungarian), currently operating at the University of Debrecen, offers opportunities for further research.
“In addition to learning, students also have several opportunities for recreation during the semester, as they can participate in events organised by the Student Self-Government and the Hungarian Dental Students’ Association, including the Freshman Camp, the Medical Cup, the “Halving” Ball and the Professional Evenings,” the Dean noted.
