In line with previous years’ practice, the Municipality of Debrecen has helped and is still helping those in need this heating season.
According to the municipal decree on the local rules of municipal subsidies, people in need can apply for housing maintenance subsidies continuously throughout the year. Since 2016, the housing maintenance allowance has also been available in the form of firewood—up to 25 m3 per year, delivered in two instalments. In 2024, 157 applicants applied for firewood from the Municipality of Debrecen, while in 2025, the social department of the Mayor’s Office has so far granted this form of support in kind to 33 applicants.
People in need can receive a one-off supply of 5 m3 of firewood during the winter months, on the advice of the police, family support services and the field guard. In freezing weather, when the Ministry of the Interior declares a Code Red, the city also provides a one-off 5 m³ of firewood to those in need, at the request of the Family Assistance Service. Eight people in need were supplied because of the exceptional weather in February.
The firewood provided to eligible and disadvantaged people comes from wood removed from public areas of the city and chipped into firewood by public sector workers at Dekert Nonprofit Ltd. The company also delivers wood to families in need.
Dry mixed firewood not used for social purposes can be sold by Dekert Nonprofit Ltd. on a market basis, generating revenue. The company can use the proceeds for development purposes, such as buying machinery and tools. The company currently has 270 tonnes of firewood for sale.
