Mayor of Debrecen, László Papp, Member of Parliament, László Pósán and Municipal Representative of the area, Zoltán Piros, announced the development of the transport infrastructure in the southern part of the city at a press conference on the 7th of March 2025 at the site of the project.
As László Papp highlighted, the city council adopted Debrecen’s 2025 budget on the 27th of February, and practically immediately after that, the construction machinery started here. According to the Mayor, 2025 will be the year of major transport developments in the city. The first investment in this process is the construction of the second section of manorial road, Mandolás Street. With government support, the city will be able to launch the development of the road network in the southern city centre. This transport system includes the Halász Street roundabout, Dobogó Street, Mandolás Street and the manorial road. A 725-meter section will be built in the coming months, connecting the Halász Street roundabout with Gázvezeték Street. The project also includes the creation of a four-way roundabout with an inner radius of 12 metres on Gázvezetik Street, so this road section will be connected to Gázvezeték Street via an intersection without traffic lights. The entire project, including the new roundabout, the road section to be built, the associated utilities, public lighting and a closed stormwater drainage system, will cost a total of 1.7 billion forints. Excavation work has already started and the whole project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. At that time, the transport system in this part of the city will be fully operational, providing a safer and more comfortable transport option in the Tégláskert and Epreskert area. The works will create noise and temporary inconvenience, but once completed, the area will be a much more liveable and comfortable place to live and visit.
László Papp emphasised that from the perspective of developing the future vision of the southern part of the city, it was very important to design a transport system that would not burden the residential streets of Tégláskert with vehicle traffic. This was the primary consideration. That is why the manorial road will be built parallel to Kanális Street with the Gázvezeték Street junction. The other important virtue of this development policy idea is that the traffic from Vértesi Street to Mikepércsi Street will not only burden Gázvezetik Street, but with the construction of the manorial road, it will also be possible to reach Mikepércsi Street from Gázvezeték Street towards the Tesco store, thus allowing traffic to be shared. The next stage of the developments will be the construction of a connecting road behind the Tesco store between Dobogó Street and Szatke Ferenc Street, which means that this part of the city will have three junctions instead of the current one in the coming years, providing access to Mikepércsi Street – Main Road 47. The Mayor also said that the development of the southern part of the city is on the agenda. First, the transport infrastructure must be built in order for these areas to be sufficiently valuable and developable. The construction of a residential park with several hundred apartments has already begun in the area. Between the Gázvezeték Street slag engine stadium and the airport, there are almost exclusively municipally owned areas, which provide opportunities for serious development and the creation of the southern city centre.
According to Member of Parliament, László Pósán the work on the site is a textbook example of what a complex urban development can encompass, and how its individual elements can work in parallel and in coordination with each other. A new residential area will be built, with appropriate roads. Obviously, these elements only work together if the developments are all coordinated from the very beginning. The city is a very good manager, and a very good planner of such works. The novelty of this urban development activity is that it will be possible to solve a lot of things, starting with transportation issues, while at the same time the specific urban, rural image and local identity of the existing city districts Tégláskert and Epreskert, which is sympathetic to many, will not be damaged, and may even be strengthened, since the increasing vehicle traffic will not affect it. The other residential area that is being developed will be a little different in nature. Debrecen is characterised by the fact that there are so many smaller and larger parts of the city, each with its own image, its own identity, and its own set of values. This together gives Debrecen its strength, this diversity, which in the best sense of the word boils down to Debrecen’s civic consciousness and unity. This is also happening here. László Pósán said that he had not yet encountered urban development work similar to that in Debrecen in Hungary, and that recognition should be given to those involved.
The local government representative of the area, Zoltán Piros summed up the public comments he had received from Tégláskert, Epreskert and Boldogfalvi kert in recent years by saying that the current transport development will indeed be positive not only for those participating in through traffic, but also for those living in the area. People traveling from the southern part of the city to the western part of the city still face many difficulties, and the traffic also has a disruptive effect on everyday life. The new road section will offer a solution to this problem, as it will allow for smooth, dynamic travel between the southern and western parts of the city, and the residents will truly regain the identity of their city that was favourable to them when they moved here. The areas of Tégláskert, Epreskert and Boldogfalvi kert will therefore once again be quieter. The representative also mentioned that this year the planning of the renewal of Vértesi Road and the implementation of the Vértesi Road railway crossing in the form of an overpass will begin, which will also contribute to the dynamic development of traffic conditions and the peaceful everyday life of those living here.
