122 talented boxers from ten nations will compete in the István Bocskai International Boxing Memorial Tournament, which began on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at the Oláh Gábor Street Sports Hall in Debrecen.
At the opening of the series of matches featuring men’s and women’s fighters from Azerbaijan, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Wales and the host country Hungary, President of the Hungarian Boxing Federation, István Kovács said that the spirit of the sport reflects courage, perseverance, honour and will and these values are embodied in the ring at the international tournament that started today.
“This competition is also a tribute to the heroes who have significantly enhanced the reputation of Hungarian boxing during these 69 years. The spirit of the legends is here in the hall, the legends live with us,” István Kovács emphasised.
The new national coach of Hungarian boxing, the Italian Emanuele Renzini, also attended the opening of the competition. As he said, he already knows the members of the Hungarian national team well from various world competitions and believes that Hungarian boxing represents a high quality, but there is always room for improvement. Next week, the national team will travel to Tata, where they will begin preparations for the first world championship of the new world federation, World Boxing.
“We will work hard. We have enough time, more than three years until the Olympic Game, and the Liverpool championship in September will be important to get confirmation that Hungarian boxing is on the right track,” the National Coach said.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa put it at the opening,” The commemorative competition with a long history in Debrecen looks forward to a bright future thanks to the negotiations with the Hungarian Boxing Federation.”
“The goal is for Bocskai to become a real brand in the coming years. The city government of Debrecen is a partner in this, as many boxers work and play sports in the city, and two of our clubs are registered with the Hungarian Boxing Federation,” the Deputy Mayor added.
Fans can follow the fights every day until Saturday, March 15, in the sports hall on Oláh Gábor Street, where competitors from 10 men’s and 10 women’s weight categories will enter the ring, including Debrecen’s favourite, last year’s European Championship silver medalist Attila Bernáth. The women’s finals will be held on Friday, March 14, from 4:00 p.m., and the men’s finals on Saturday, March 15, from 6:00 p.m.
