The development of the city brings with it an increase in traffic, so better use and coordination of private and public transport is a key task for the future of Debrecen. This will be supported by the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, which is why the Smart City Centre is being set up.
“Debrecen is a regional centre, and one of the biggest challenges for the coming years will be to redefine and reorganise transport. This will be helped by the creation of a city management centre,” Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs said on Wednesday at the regional transport conference, where he gave a presentation on the city’s mobility development. The professional forum was organised jointly by DKV and the county organisation of the Transport Science Association in Debrecen.
“We will use the latest technological tools. First and foremost, it is important to be able to dynamise traffic, to think about the directions we want to take. We want to give priority to public transport, it is very important to give it a boost, and overall we are trying to organise the city’s traffic in such a way that we can also enforce environmental aspects,” Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs added.
DKV is trying to make public transport in Debrecen even more efficient by developing its fleet, monitoring the utilisation of the routes and responding to passenger needs. The growing economic areas around the city are a new challenge for the transport company.
“There will be more travel demand, the industrial parks will have to be integrated into public transport, and at the same time the city’s transport will have to be provided at a steady pace. Road renovations are underway in the city, and we are currently expecting increases in journey times, but we are always looking for the optimum solution to help passengers reach their destinations as quickly as possible,” CEO of DKV PLC Szabolcs Tóth said.
Deputy State Secretary for Transport Strategy, Lóránd Bói praised the mobility development efforts in Debrecen. The politician stressed that one of the common goals of the city and the government is the development of fixed-route transport.
