Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Debrecen has some fantastic spots for our four-legged friends to unleash their joy!
Let’s also see the perfect places to let your furry friend run free and socialise in Debrecen!
Apart from the Great Forest, Debrecen offers a variety of other options that cater to your canine companions and to make the most of your time with your beloved pet!
- The dog run near the Wesselényi housing estate, consists of two parts: an agility track and a free play area, is located in the green area in front of 31-39 Vígkedvű Mihály Street. The dog run in the Wesselényi housing estate covers an area of 1600 m2.
- The dog run in Újkert (20 Lehel Street) covers an area of almost 1100 m2, designed to function as a community space for the animals and the owners.
- The Békessy Béla Street dog run, located at number 10, also has a fenced area for dogs.
- Similar dog runs can be found in Vénkert Street, on István Road, in the north-eastern part of the city in the Kassai Road housing estate (16 Keresszegi Street) and in the Mikerpércsi district (61 Mikepércsi Road). A skill-building obstacle course for dogs has also been set up in the 250 square metre area in Kassai Road dog run. It includes a slalom course, tunnel, tipping, ball and jumping obstacles.
- Even before the development started, the Vezér Street reservoir was already a popular spot, and it seems to have become a paradise for dogs. Dog walkers from all over the city come to the Debrecen reservoir every day of the week, which was created as a gift from the first phase of the Civaqua programme and will be expanded with various features in the future.
- The Debrecen Dog School (Simon László Street) is a dog run primarily for dogs attending school, where they are provided with socialisation and training opportunities
Of course, safety comes first. All these parks are well-maintained with clean areas, waste disposal stations, and even some shaded spots for those hot summer days!
Just a friendly reminder: don’t forget your doggie bags and always keep an eye on your puppy.
So, if you find yourself in Debrecen and own a dog, check out these amazing dog-run parks! It’s a compact city with spacious parks that create endless tail-wagging happiness.
One more thing:
Travelling with a dog in Debrecen is easy and free! Thanks to a decision taken by the city council, from 1 April 2025, all dogs can travel free of charge on the city’s buses, trolleybuses and trams.
Some helpful travel tips for owners using public transport with their dog to ensure the safety of passengers and animals:
- Dog owners must have a dog vaccination certificate with them every time they use public transport vehicles.
- The dog should be accustomed to the vehicles, starting with short trips so that the dog gets used to the noise and the crowd.
- Dog owners should always have water with them to give their pets water to keep them hydrated.
- For good behaviour, the dog should get a treat after getting off.
- In all cases, the dog should have a muzzle and leash so that the owner can ensure the safety of the passengers and avoid inconveniences. – Small dogs are exempt from this, but in this case, they must only be transported in a closed box or bag from which the animal cannot escape.
- DKV draws attention to the fact that a dog owner can only travel with one dog at a time.
- Passengers transporting dogs are responsible for ensuring that the dogs do not disturb each other or passengers.
