On the occasion of the City’s Day, more than 2,000 Debrecen pastries, “batyus” were prepared and then distributed on Kossuth square. Among the ingredients of the delicacy is the Debrecen double sausage chosen as Hungaricum, so this course can be expected to enrich the Debrecen’s Cultural Heritage as well.

Hundreds of students gathered in the main square to taste the new Debrecen speciality for the first time. “The  batyu is very tasty, the dough is very good, I didn’t expect it to be like this, because I really liked it and I thought it would be worse, it’s very tasty,” one of the participating students, Blanka Dorka Reszegi said.

The object of the record attempt was to make and distribute 1849 pastries in one day. The reason for this is that almost 175 years ago to the day, on the 14th of April 1849, the Parliament issued the Declaration of Independence in Debrecen at the request of Lajos Kossuth. To this was added the fact that Debrecen was granted the title of a free royal city 331 years ago.

Thus, the three institutions of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre and the students of the  Diószegi Sámuel Technical and Vocational School made a total of 2180 pastries.

They were very happy to come, so we had to select the children who would participate in the preparation from the many applicants. The base of the pasta and the batyu itself is a puff pastry and the Debrecen double sausage, as well as cheeses and shallots cut and chopped in it,” Instructor at the DSZC Irinyi János Technical College Antal Lukács said.

The recipe was created by the chefs of the Hajdúság Gastronomy Club, who supervised the preparation process themselves. The new delicacy replaced the city’s birthday cake, and its recipe was symbolically handed over to the City’s Mayor László Papp. ”I would really like it to stay alive and be available on the tables of Debrecen families or on the menus of various restaurants, I hope that the Debrecen batyu will have a world conquering career, and we have tried to contribute to this with a world record,” he said.

According to the plans, the recipe for the Batyu in Debrecen will be made public soon, and the general public will be able to find the special dish at events in the city.
