The Caring Debrecen programme will deliver welfare and green space improvements in the city in 2025. The environmental regeneration of the city centre and the Tócó Valley will continue, as well as the development and greening of the courtyards of educational institutions and kindergartens, including the eco-park. As reported before, the innovative eco park in Tócó Valley will create a new green public park covering 11 hectares, including a 3-hectare water area.

“These programmes are characterised by a deeper and more and more responsive mindset to the challenges of climate change. Eco parks are not only about enhancing the return on energy invested locally through a circular economy, but also about ensuring that plants can survive ecologically, even when they get less rain in the summer and less frost in the winter, or when it does freeze, the temperature is very extreme,” András Kuhn said.

The Chief Gardener of Debrecen highlighted in the programme “Evening close-up” of Debrecen Television,  that the eco park could be combined with an urban intensive park area, and this park will provide a great recreational opportunity for the people of Debrecen.

The “Let’s Plant 10,000 trees in Debrecen!” progarmme  was a great success, we filled the “holes” with the first round. We can now put up the “full board” on some green areas of the city, and in the future the tree planting can go in two directions: in the outskirts there are streets without trees, and in the city centre the really expensive part is coming.

“We plant trees where there was never green space, we break up the pavement, clear it of utilities and plant the trees, thus reducing the heat island effect, which is also a big challenge in the climate situation,” András Kuhn said.

“Solving the watering problem is a big challenge, which is why trees are planted close to each other as part of the programme,” the Chief  Gardener added. He also said that they are counting on the people of Debrecen to help with tree planting, so the “Adopt a Tree” programme will be launched, details of which will be announced later.
