On April 22, 2025, construction work will begin on one of the busiest intersections in Debrecen, located at Road 33’s junction with Balmazújvárosi Road, Füredi Road, Csigekert Street, and Szabó Lőrinc Street.
This comprehensive redevelopment is carried out by the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM), with execution by the consortium of Debreceni Mélyépítő Holding Kft. and “KE-VÍZ 21” Zrt., following the placement of temporary traffic signs.
The first phase, starting April 22, 2025, will see the closure of the junctions of Csigekert Street and Szabó Lőrinc Street. Two-way traffic on Füredi Road and Balmazújvárosi Road will be maintained with 2×1 lanes. Traffic lights at the intersection will be turned off. Temporary bus stops and a pedestrian crossing regulated by traffic signals will be established.
At the same time, a one-way traffic regulation will be introduced, considering residents’ needs:
- Csata Street towards Csigekert Street,
- Bölcs Street (from house number 35) towards Csigekert Street,
- József Attila Street towards Böszörményi Road.
The affected section of Szabó Lőrinc Street can be bypassed via:
- Akadémia Street – Böszörményi Road (Highway 35),
- Károli Gáspár Street – Vezér Street – Böszörményi Road,
- Károli Gáspár Street – Vezér Street – Domokos Márton Street – Balmazújvárosi Road (Highway 33),
- Karinthy Frigyes Street – “Decathlon” roundabout through a temporarily constructed 240-meter stabilised road.
The affected section of Csigekert Street can be bypassed via:
- Bartók Béla Road – Pesti Street (Road 35),
- Bartók Béla Road – Köntösgát sor – Balmazújvárosi Road (Highway 33).
Bus routes 14/14Y will continue running on their original route: Tessedik Sámuel Street – Szabó Lőrinc Street – Akadémia Street – Böszörményi Road – Bartók Béla Road – turnaround at the roundabout – Bartók Béla Road. Updates and potential changes can be found on the DKV Zrt. website.
The temporary traffic measures will be in effect from April 22, 2025, until approximately November 2025.
Demolition work is expected to begin on April 28, 2025, with completion projected for July 2026.
Drivers are advised to follow the posted temporary traffic signs and, if possible, avoid the affected section of the road.

During the project’s execution, the main road section will be expanded from the current four lanes to six lanes. On Csigekert Street, the number of traffic lanes will increase from two to four, while on Szabó Lőrinc Street, it will expand from two to five lanes. A complete pavement renovation will take place along a 786-meter section of Route 33, while the pavement will be renewed over stretches of 156 meters on Csigekert Street and 113 meters on Szabó Lőrinc Street.
As part of the development, existing pedestrian and bicycle paths along Highway 33 will be refurbished, and a new pedestrian and bicycle path will be built on Szabó Lőrinc Street, creating a direct connection to the existing cycling network. The works will also involve large-scale utility relocations.
