The ball went round at the Chemical Technical School’s Christmas volleyball tournament in the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre’s Chemical Technical School, which the institution implemented as part of the Move, Debrecen! school program on the 16th of  December, 2024. The sporting event was born from the school’s idea, and the Chemical Technical School debuted in the program with this event. Competitors from 12 teams from 10 schools competed hard in the last week before the winter break for a special Christmas present.

The Debrecen Vocational Training Centre joined the Move, Debrecen! school program in 2023 with the aim of promoting sport and healthy lifestyles among young people as widely as possible. In the Vocational Training Centre’s institutions, school coordinators are working to achieve this goal, with the help of which new, innovative ideas are being developed to organise championships and sporting events. These events are mainly aimed at students who do not regularly take part in physical activity or sport in an organised setting. The mission is to make the students of Debrecen as healthy and balanced as possible.

At the opening of the tournament, Chancellor of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, Zsolt Tirpák said that before the holidays everyone is eager to get out of the school desks, which is an excellent opportunity provided by the volleyball tournament organised by the Chemical Technical School. In addition to the constant professional and academic challenges, it is important to lead a balanced and healthy life. And being able to laugh, play sport and experience success in a community is a particularly uplifting feeling for individuals. The head of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre said he was proud of the students and teachers who took part in the sports event and wished everyone a day of fun and exercise.

Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, Diána Széles also welcomed the participants and explained that one of the main goals of the Move, Debrecen! program is to reach out to school children and young people who do not participate in organised sports. The Deputy Mayor thanked the entire Debrecen Vocational Training Centre community for practically showing how this initiative could be extended to secondary school pupils, which literally gets this age group moving. Good examples of this are the recent knock-out or table tennis tournaments, and the recent volleyball cup. The aim of the programme is to give young people a sense of well-being through sport, and to find the form of physical activity that they most want to do in their community.

Director of the Debrecen Institute for Primary Care and Health Development, Csaba Papp highlighted the health importance of the Move, Debrecen! program. He reminded the young people that during sport, hormones are produced in the body that contribute to improving physical and mental performance, to strengthening and maintaining motivation, and last but not least, to giving satisfaction and happiness. Nowadays, young people spend a lot of time using electronic devices, which results in little physical activity, so the opportunities to exercise and exercise their muscles are becoming more valuable, which is why community sporting events like today’s are so important.
