The aim of the city history competition is to strengthen the children’s attachment to Debrecen and Hungary.

“Homeland until the end: Debrecen” was the title of a city history competition for upper-grade students at Árpád Vezér Primary School. Lower-grade students could participate in the complex literacy quiz “The People of Árpád”.

The upper-grade students’ competition consisted of three rounds, including solving test tasks and making presentations. Fifteen teams of three from the city’s primary schools compared their knowledge, while eight groups of lower-grade students competed with each other. Their tasks included spelling and listening comprehension. Deputy Mayor István Puskás invited the three best teams to tour the Old Town Hall.

According to the Head of the Institution, Szabolcs Komolay, the competition aims for students to learn about our national traditions, national culture and the history of Debrecen. “We are convinced that a successful life can be built with strong ties. People who have roots are successful, who know where they come from, where they are, and where they are going because that is how they can plan their lives. We intend to convey this kind of knowledge to our students with this competition and to strengthen the bond that binds them to Hungary and Debrecen,” Szabolcs Komolay said.
