The working group responsible for the coordination of Debrecen’s development projects, consisting of representatives of the Debrecen city administration and the Ministry of Construction and Transport, held its first meeting to review a number of development projects affecting Debrecen. Following the meeting on Wednesday, the 18th of October 2023, Mayor László Papp and State Secretary for Transport Bálint Nagy presented the details.

“According to a government decision published on 22nd September 2023, the close and extremely good and fruitful cooperation between the government and the City of Debrecen in recent years could be continued at an even higher level. The working group aims to continue the priority investments and developments in Debrecen”, said State Secretary Bálint Nagy.

The Secretary of State highlighted that Debrecen is a good example of how the Western automotive industry and Eastern technology meeting can be focused on achieving the best possible results. Local concerns and interests must be brought to the fore alongside development.

Bálint Nagy said that the working group will review the current processes monthly, as planned, to ensure that the development started in Debrecen so far can continue steadily.

According to Mayor László Papp, today’s working group meeting is a continuation of the cooperation established with the government following the announcement of the BMW investment.

The government decisions of the past months have highlighted the need for this kind of working group cooperation, which will accompany the investments and processes of the coming period that will determine the life of Debrecen in the coming years and decades.

As the mayor recalled, in April and July 2023, the government decided on two major packages of developments for Debrecen, amounting to HUF 300 billion. This makes Debrecen one of the most important development centres in the country. It was also agreed with the government that these developments should focus on industrial areas and serving the population’s needs.

László Papp pointed out that the city has a strong economy, but the priority is urban development and urban planning. Development programmes have been proposed to the government that can improve the city’s citizens’ lives and quality of life.

The Mayor also said that today’s task force meeting reviewed the underway areas and developments. Notable among these is the water utility development programme, which, in addition to the implementation of water and sewerage and stormwater drainage programmes in industrial areas, is also on the agenda, as well as the development of the city-wide water infrastructure. A water improvement programme for the city’s eastern part, which the inhabitants have long requested, will be presented soon.

László Papp added that transport improvements were also reviewed, with 19 developments being discussed. Of these, five major intersection improvements have already been announced. Other development points of this programme are the realisation of the intersection of Árpád Square – Rakovszky Street – Otemető Street, the construction of the intersection of Hétvezér Street – No. 48. reconstruction of the junction of the main road and improvement of the junction of the Szoboszlói Road – Außenvásártér. In 2024, long-awaited investments will be launched in many parts of the city. The timetable for these improvements will be set in such a way that they do not jeopardise the city’s transport operations.

In addition, rail improvements and airport development were discussed, all of which are in the city’s interest,” concluded Mayor László Papp.
