The Advent Fair opened in all its glory last night, and so many people visited because of the vendors’ goods and the unique Christmas atmosphere.
“We were able to come out together because we haven’t had the time before, and we would like to come back another time,” one of the passers-by in the main square, Lajos Vári Nagy, said.
Most of them are looking for small things at the fair, which they can later surprise their loved ones with under the tree. Some also visit the same stalls year after year.
“I love to support Hungarian craftsmen and these are the products I look for and buy at the Christmas market, we have our favourite little stalls where we buy a lot,” another fair participant, Krisztina Tóth-Szilágyi said.
Again, this year, the fair’s most popular vendors were those selling mulled wine, hot tea, and popular Christmas dishes.
“Our fried flat bread is always the most delicious, they love it very much. Of course, it is part of the Christmas atmosphere. Our mulled wine is also like that, available in many flavours; our cranberry is the most loved,” one of the vendors, Sándorné Molnár, shared her experiences.
During Advent, visitors are expected to visit six locations with over a hundred programs. The organisers have also prepared a fairy tale town, an Advent corner and craft activities for children. There will also be stage programs, and donations and charity will also be in focus in the fair area.
“There is also a donation box under the Christmas tree and the “pass on” house in the memorial garden behind the Great Church. We wanted to make Advent in Debrecen accessible to everyone, and that’s why we have a 1500 forint one-off dish that if someone comes to visit, they can taste, “ Managing Director of Főnix Event Organiser Ltd. Zita Dobos drew attention to.
Similar to last year, schoolchildren have the opportunity to skate for free on the ice rink in the main square this year.
“More than nine thousand children will be provided with free skating this year, which is very important. We want every child in Debrecen to have the opportunity to try skating at the Advent fair, regardless of their financial situation,” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised.
The ice rink will be open until the 6th of January 2025.
