Debreceni Vízmű Zrt. will carry out a drinking water pipeline reconstruction at the intersection of Hunyadi and Rákóczi streets in Debrecen between the 26 of October and the 7 of November 2023.

The 300 millimetre diameter pipeline is being upgraded using lining technology.

The works will start on Thursday (26 October 2023) and the front of the traffic island next to the straight lane will be partially demolished to allow traffic to pass, thus widening the traffic area during the construction work, which will involve traffic restrictions.

Construction will continue on Saturday (28 October 2023) with the dismantling of the pavement, followed by the dismantling of the fittings on the 30th and 31st of October and the lining of the pipeline on the 2nd and 3rd of November. Depending on the weather, the pavement will be restored on the 6th and 7th of November.

A temporary traffic regime will be in place in the affected area during the works:

  • On Hunyadi Street, the right-turn lane in front of the primary school and the inner straight lane will be closed as planned. Traffic in the direction of Rákóczi utca will continue straight ahead using the bus lane, with two lanes, depending on site conditions, with lane closures expected. One lane will be provided to the left in the direction of the “small” Rákóczi Street. The pedestrian island in front of the Forum shopping centre will be partially closed.
  • From the direction of Csapó Street, the outer straight lane of Rákóczi Street (the lane leading to the shopping centre) will be partially closed. Traffic will be diverted by removing the front of the traffic island next to the straight lane as a first step.

This reconstruction is also necessary because in 2024 the municipality intends to complete the missing bus lane on Hunyadi Street between Rákóczi Street and Péterfia Street. If the water utility reconstruction is completed now, it will no longer be necessary to deal with it during the planned bus lane investment.

The waterworks reconstruction will be carried out during the school autumn break, with the expected lower than average traffic.

Drivers are asked to avoid this section of road if possible to reduce congestion.
