Given the heat alert, drinking water is distributed in Debrecen’s city centre. From the 14th to the 18th of August 2024, water will be provided to passers-by between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and the weekend.
Due to the rising temperatures in the previous weeks, humidification devices have been installed in several places in and around the main square, on Kossuth Square, Dósa Nádor Square, at the Small Reformed Church, Tócóskert, Angyalföld Square, and the Water Tower promenade. Preparations have begun for the long weekend heatwave forecast, and arrangements have been made to install vapour-barrier equipment in other parts of the city centre to match the carnival theme.
As in past years, the city government will distribute drinking water in the city centre with the help of the volunteer members of the Debrecen Charity Board. During the heat alert (14 – 18 August), drinking water will be provided at Kossuth Square between 12.00 pm and 4.00 pm and at the Great Market (Nagypiac) between 8.00 am and 12.00 pm on the 15th and 16th of August.
No one must leave home without a drink! Not only children and elderly people but also pets should be looked after, so dogs and cats should be provided with sufficient and cool drinking water.
Given the heatwave, the Green Space Inspectorate of the Debrecen Mayor’s Office is taking extra care to water plants in public areas early in the morning and late in the evening.
It also pays special attention to the proper operation of automatic irrigation systems. Public drinking fountains located in playgrounds, busy promenades, and parks are constantly in operation and monitored. All public water fountains and spouting wells are in operation, which helps reduce the heat sensation.
Debrecen is a caring city, and to make the residents feel more comfortable, the Municipality distributed drinking water and installed vapour gates.
Elderly people, young children, pregnant women and people with cardiovascular disease are asked not to leave their homes during the heatwave alert unless necessary.
