The most outstanding achievements of the year 2024 were recognised at the DSI Debrecen Gala.
Every year at the DSI Debrecen Gala, the best athletes and their coaches from the various sports departments, the best male and female junior and adult athletes, the coach of the year, the good student-athlete awards, and the main sponsor of the year are awarded. The three athletes who will be sponsored by László Bárány and his family in the given year will also be announced. At the event, László Papp underlined that at the beginning of the year, people and organisations facing serious challenges set new goals and take stock of the period behind them. The Mayor said that planning and analysis go hand in hand, and this is particularly true in sport. “They are active members of a large family of which we are proud, as DSI Debrecen has played a prominent role in Debrecen sporting life for several decades. The sports school is a brand that is now known all over the world, and its athletes are known far and wide,” László Papp pointed out.
He added that, without claiming completeness, Gréta Kerekes, Hanga Klekner, Luca Kozák, and Petra Senánszky are sports icons who are role models for all of us. “DSI Debrecen has provided an extraordinary performance: last year, the coaches and trainers of the sports school worked with almost one and a half thousand children in 17 sports departments. Recognising the extraordinary role of sport, our local government has provided and will continue to provide all kinds of support so that our talented athletes can live a healthy, productive, meaningful life in the city and perform well in their competitions,” the Mayor explained, who also drew attention to the importance of the Move, Debrecen! school programme.
András Becsky recalled in his speech that a month has passed since the end of the European Women’s Handball Championship, where the Hungarian matches and the semi-finals were held in the arena. “I am proud that we cheered the girls on and helped them to win a fantastic bronze medal in Vienna,“ the Managing Director said. He added that the arena has hosted several memorable events in the past month: the FőnixFitt event, concerts, and stage performances. “For me, this gala is the best moment every year, since it is the best time to showcase our talents, achievements, and successes. We are two days after the M4 Sport Sportsperson of the Year Gala, where outstanding performances were honoured.”
“These achievements and tonight’s award winners will help inspire and motivate young people here to achieve their goals,” András Becsky emphasised. He also pointed out that last year, after completing a five-year cycle, they were given a mandate to continue their work, which he hopes to continue with the same level of success as in previous years. “We are grateful for the city’s sporting facilities, which provide an excellent backdrop for our day-to-day work,” the Executive Director stressed.
Swimmer and fin swimmer Petra Senánszky was chosen as the athlete of the year, while her trainer, Dávid Kókai, was named coach of the year.
Women’s and men’s junior athletes of the year were awarded to fencer Blanka Virág Nagy and triathlete Gergő Dobi.
Every year László Bárány and his family (the three owners of the Master Good Group) support three athletes of DSI Debrecen from their private wealth: this year the family’s support goes to fencer Rita Sárvári, cyclist Réka Tóth, and weightlifter Nándor Tóth.
Synergy Construction Hungary Ltd. was chosen as the main sponsor of the year.
