The Deputy Mayor in charge of urban management and environmental protection, Ákos Balázs said they would like to create an eco-park in the Tócó Valley and the preparatory work will start this year, with HUF 70 million earmarked for the planning in the city’s budget this year, adding
Debrecen attaches great importance to the development opportunities that will help it to increase the city’s water surface.
These wetland developments will contribute significantly to improving Debrecen’s air quality and climate.
“The innovative eco park in Tócó Valley will create a new green public park covering 11 hectares, including a 3-hectare water area. These elements will contribute to the creation of an urban blue and green corridor,” Ákos Balázs said. In addition to its ecological importance, the new park will provide active and passive recreational opportunities for the people of Debrecen.
The Deputy Mayor stressed that the reservoirs along the Tócó Stream are the main actors in the city’s programme to improve water conservation. These “ponds” will also be able to collect large amounts of rainwater that suddenly falls on the city.
The public park will include water trails, playgrounds, sports fields and other facilities. In addition to active recreation areas, quieter areas will be created. The clean-up of the banks of the lake will go hand in hand with the development of the park, creating blue and green corridors.
Chief Gardener of Debrecen, András Kunh said that the focus should no longer be just on making urban life more pleasant with public parks, but also on making urban life not just about people; a system of plants, animals and people should be created where everyone can flourish.
He pointed out that rather than the previous practice of draining sudden rainfall as quickly as possible, it will be more forward-looking to be able to collect it in reservoirs.
This will allow the water to evaporate and soak into the soil, which will have a beneficial effect, and these reservoirs and ponds will also provide an excellent place to relax.
