Exhibition of Central and Eastern European Children’s Books Opens

The Méliusz Juhász Péter Library hosts the contemporary illustration exhibition of the Deák17 Children’s and Youth Art Gallery and the PesText International Literary and Cultural Festival, which offers a special selection from the world of Hungarian and Transylvanian Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak contemporary artists.

Exhibition “At the same time, in the same place”, which opens on the 29th of November and can be viewed for free on the 2nd floor of the Méliusz Central Library until the 11th of January, rests on three main pillars. It provides ample immersion in the aesthetically and visually exciting publications of contemporary Transylvanian Hungarian and Romanian book publishers (such as Bookart, Gutenberg, Lector, Humanitas, Arthur, Cartier). Visitors can pick up one and a half hundred “beautiful books”, flip through them, and even immerse themselves in the library, which displays evocative creative worlds with an individual voice.

Exhibition,“Koloraturá “ representing the second pillar, is a unique collection of original illustrations from the last two decades of the Cluj children’s magazine “Sunbeam” (In Hungarian: Napsugár), published since 1957, and “Rainbow” (In Hungarian: Szivárvány), published since 1980. These monthly magazines enrich children’s pictorial taste in a meaningful way, develop their aesthetic sense, bravely reach for new techniques, and are able to embrace modern visual currents. In addition to all these virtues, magazines also have a distinct workshop character, providing a real creative community for authors belonging to different generations.

The exhibition “Koloraturá” offers a taste of the original world of 31 artists; among others, visitors can view the works of Tünde Darvay, Andrea Jánosi, Zenkő Karda, Ágnes Keszeg, Andrea Kürti, Annabella Orosz, Tünde Tomos, the living classic Helga Unipán, or Margit Soó-Zöld, who died in 2022 and won the Munkácsy Prize.

The third pillar, called “Circle Dance”(In Hungarian: Körtánc) invited artists from three countries (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia) for close cooperation within the framework of a European Union cultural tender. The stories of the invited authors were presented visually by the illustrators who entered the competition and were judged to be the best, with Romanian and Slovak illustrators for the works of Hungarian authors, Hungarian and Slovak illustrators for the works of Romanian authors, and Hungarian and Romanian illustrators for the works of Slovak authors. The result of the joint creative work is the travelling illustration exhibition and children’s literature anthology, which can also be viewed by guests visiting the Méliusz Library.

The curator of the exhibition is literary historian Nikoletta Szekeres. At the opening on the 29th of November  at 5.00 p.m., Deputy Mayor for culture István Puskás, and library director Lóránt Béla Kovács will greet those gathered.

During the Advent period, the organisers are preparing two unusual guided tours thanks to children’s literature specialist Hermina Gesztelyi and visual artist Krisztina Fábián Szántóné.
