Debrecen was granted town charter by King Louis the Great in 1361 and was a so-called “country town” without walls. It had the right to hold four fairs a year, two of which, the “Gergely” and the “Mihály Day” fairs, are still held today. It is this tradition and local characteristics that are taken into account when organising the annual Spring and Autumn National Fairs in Debrecen.

Opening hours of the fair:
- Day zero: from 6.00 p.m. (closing of the fairground, setting up of tents)
- First day: from 06.00 a.m. to 08.00 p.m.
- Second day: from 06.00 a.m. to 08.00 p.m.
