If so, sign up for the Agora’s camp! Join the camp to design your own 3D models, program LEGO robots, and conduct exciting experiments in our lab. Debrecen Flower Carnival 2024 Programmes – Updated

Flower Carnival Programmes - 2024 The 20th August is the national and state holiday of Hungary and the anniversary of the consecration of Stephen I of Hungary. In Debrecen, it is also the day of the Flower Carnival. It is a real attraction, drawing in visitors from across the country and internationally ever since it was first organised in 1966. Today the carnival is far more than just a parade of spectacular floral compositions and international artistic ensembles,  it is a week-long colourful programme of events where visitors can find the entertainment that appeals to them most. This year, more than 2000 foreign and Hungarian performers will dazzle the audience in the carnival procession accompanied by flower floats.  The audience can also tune into this year's parade via  the fascinating and enjoyable Carnival Week programmes starting on the 15th of August during which flower installations and flower sculptures will decorate the city with the Flower City, courtesy of Diehl Aviation Hungary Kft, Alföldi Nyomda Zrt, MODEM and Marianna Répáczky. Beer By Lake

During the Debrecen Flower Festival in August, more than a hundred local and international beers, ales and craft beers will be served in the shade of the trees of the Great Forest, in front of the Great Forest Open Air Stage. Visitors can enjoy the most varied Hungarian craft beers, in addition to which beer fans will also find refreshments from prestigious foreign breweries. During the event, various gastronomic and cultural programs await the visitors, in addition to which the public can choose from a range of food trucks offering culinary experiences, food and beer skates.  

Special Exhibition Opens at Pásti Street Synagogue

Rhythm will also play an important role in this exhibition, which will conclude with an open-air concert from the 15th of August at the Orthodox Synagogue in Pásti Street hosting an exhibition of Eszter Láng's works entitled “The Book of Eszter”, with a special programme of paintings, poetry and music. Deputy Mayor, István Puskás and President of Debrecen Jewish Community, Tamás Horovitz, will address the event then the exhibition will be opened by Zsolt Heller and Miklós Szénási, not in the usual way, but in the framework of the recently revived Artists' Lodge. After the opening, the hintaLOW band combining rap, hip hop and pop elements in its music, will give a full-length concert in the courtyard at which guests are awaited with a kosher “spritzer yard”. As Eszter Láng, a writer and poet, explains, the exhibition on show is largely made up of new works created this year. Joint event of “Dub Székház” (Dub Headquarters) and Budapest-based JazzaJ promises an exciting evening on the 17th of August in the inner garden of MODEM.  This summer “Fűszer Csemege” (Spice Treat) is happy to cooperate with Budapest-based JazzaJ (https://www.facebook.com/JazzzzzzzaJ) which is a music workshop launched in 2011 as a concert series, bringing together the Hungarian improvisational music scene. The team of musicians, organisers, curators and other volunteers connects and presents free jazz, noise, experimental folk and classical musicians on a common platform, using improvisation as a common tool. Churchyard Market on the 17th of August

A farmers' market with the widest range of products in the city, the Church Market opens on the third Saturday of every month at 8.00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Debrecen Great Church Congregation Centre, at 2 Leány Street. The next time it opens its doors on the 17th of August.  Local farmers and artisans sell their products at reasonable prices in the heart of the city centre offering smoked pork products, meats, cheeses, jams, vegetables, pickles, artisan gifts and much more.  As tradition has it, this time there will be “slambuc” (traditional Hungarian dish made from potatoes, pasta and bacon cooked in a pot)  and a book exchange point. Slag Motorcycle Competition – 49th Debrecen Grand Prix

This year, the Debrecen Grand Prix, Hungary's most prestigious and traditional international slag motor race, will be held for the 49th time. The international field is made up of 16 riders, many of them from professional leagues, World Cups and World Championships, who will compete in the 20 heats, followed by 2 exciting semi-finals and a spectacular 5 man final to decide who will be the champion of Debrecen in 2024. Carmina Burana on the Stage of Nagyerdei Open-Air Theatre

Carl Orff's monumental musical masterpiece, Carmina Burana comes to life in a spectacular dance theatre adaptation by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet on the stage of Nagyerdei Open-Air Theatre on the 22nd of August. The piece was revived in 2000 as a spectacular dance theatre adaptation by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet. For 23 years now, Tamás Juronics' iconic choreography has been one of the most outstanding works of the Hungarian contemporary dance scene, attracting thousands of audiences at home, across Europe and overseas, and winning the company numerous audience and professional awards. Carmina Burana vividly captures the shared fears and joys of an imaginary barbarian community as it struggles for its own survival and humanity. The length of the play is 70 min, in case of rain the event will be held on the 23rd of August. THE 3X3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Since 2015, there have been 20 three-on-three competitions in Kossuth Square, the most of any host city. Continuing the annual tradition, Debrecen will welcome the finest talents in the 3×3 basketball world during the last week of August. Alongside the World Championships, the city's main square, set against the stunning backdrop of the Reformed Great Church, will host the World Tour Masters, showcasing the top-ranked professional teams. The mayor also announced that the City of Debrecen and FIBA have extended the agreement on the organisation of 3x3 basketball events until 2026. Special Night Event with the Zsuzsi Forest Railway on the 24th of August

Zsuzsi Forest Railway is preparing for a summer closing programme and invites visitors to a special night event on the 24th of August, celebrating the predators of the night, owls and stars. A special feature of the closing forest event of the summer is that the location of the event can be reached by the 142-year-old Zsuzsi Forest Railway. Season Opener Event of Vojtina Puppet Theatre

The Vojtina Puppet Theatre Company will open the new season with its traditional season-opening celebration on Sunday, the 25th of August at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Garden behind the Great Church.  The repertoire of the event includes two performances.  First, the performance titled Piglet and Goose, with two giddy heroes, will be the main attraction for young and old. Krisztina Tóth's stories, which are delightful for children and their parents alike, are full of humour, making the performance a real family experience.  The title of the other performance is Aubergine cream Székelymenyecske style  (Székely folk tale figure) is a folk tale flavoured with folk songs, performed by Anna Markó-Valentyik.  There will be stilt walking, all sorts of interesting Renaissance games to try, and of course, crafts, puppet making and bean cuddling for the little ones. The members of the company will be joined by musicians to provide the entertainment, but before the performances, there will also be a gastronomic and culinary skills competition.
