As the opening event of the Great Forest Week, an exhibition presenting Hungary’s most beautiful forest, the Great Forest of Debrecen, was opened in the New Town Hall Gallery on 9th of October 2023.
János Mazsu, President of the Great Forest Society and of the Debrecen Treasures Committee, said at the opening ceremony that the exhibition entitled “Our Great Forest” fits into the Debrecen Treasures series and the Great Forest Week series of events and, in some ways, also what we feel when the seasons change. As he said, the chamber exhibition is also an invitation to an intellectual and spiritual adventure. On one side, 14 photographers show how they see the Great Forest, while the other pillar of the exhibition is the Natural History Archives.
“We, the people of Debrecen, have always known that the Great Forest is the most beautiful forest in Hungary, but now we have the paper to prove it, as we have won this award. But it also required community activity because we had to vote on it, and the people of Debrecen were active,” Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Ákos Balázs said.
He said that one of the best things in everyday life is to have enough time to go out into the woods and play sports, read, relax or spend time with friends and family. He stressed that the Great Forest Week is the result of a broad collaboration, and one of the main protagonists of the exhibition opening today is the photo club, which has been working for 90 years, contributing to the city.
András Máthé, president of the Debrecen Photography Club, pointed out that the pictures are worth a close look and study, as each one is a work of art in its own right. As he said, the exhibited pictures are simple nature photographs, but they are accompanied by considerable expertise and knowledge.
Zoltán Váradi, head of Természettár (local environment organization), said that although the Archives is an earlier exhibition, it is a great honour to be here. He added that as part of the exhibition, there is also a remixable jigsaw puzzle.
The exhibition “Our Great Forest” will be on display until 5th of November 2023, during the opening hours of the New Town Hall.
