The Municipality of Debrecen, in cooperation with a number of partners, has launched a campaign called “Water is Our Common Treasure”, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of rainwater harvesting.

The first rainwater containers were handed over to the successful applicants on 22nd of September 2023, with the assistance of Mayor of Debrecen László Papp and Balázs Vadon, a member of the Municipality.

Speaking at the event, the mayor said that the municipality had already launched a number of actions that contribute to the city’s environmentally friendly operation and beautification. The distribution of annual flowers in the spring and leaf bags in the autumn has long been known.

The municipality has recently added a new initiative to this range: the possibility to apply for rainwater containers. 485 available rainwater containers were requested quickly by the residents of the southern part of Debrecen. These were distributed on 22nd of September and on the weekend. As more people would like to have a rainwater container, it was decided to continue this campaign throughout the city.

More and more rain is falling in Debrecen, with large amounts of rain falling in a relatively short period of time. According to László Papp, “since sustainability is an essential part of our lives, rainwater containers could help to retain some of this rainfall for irrigation purposes and could replace a lot of the drinking water currently used for irrigation.”
