On the occasion of Easter, the Debrecen Charity Board prepared long lasting food packages for families in need in Debrecen, which were supplemented with 5,040 eggs donated by the Rákóczi Mezőgazdasági Zrt.

Part of the donations was handed over at a public press event attended by Mayor of Debrecen László Papp, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen and Co-Chair of the Debrecen Charity Board Diána Széles, President of the Debrecen Charity Board András Törő and representative of  Rákóczi Agricultural Ltd. of Földes, István Szőllősi on the 25th of March 2024.

As Mayor László Papp said, it has become a tradition to take care of families in need before the major holidays of the year. In preparation for the celebrations, they can receive a gift package through the Debrecen Charity Board. The Municipality of Debrecen supports the activities of the Board, which can be used to put together donation packages for families. There are also a lot of businesses in Debrecen and the region, as well as private donors who help the Debrecen Charity Board to take care of families in difficult situations and help them prepare for the holidays. On behalf of the city, the mayor thanked the donors for their help, in this case Rákóczi Mezőgazdasági Zrt., which donated 5,040 eggs, as Easter is unthinkable without eggs.

On the other hand, before the holiday, the Debrecen Charity Board distributed a total of 1,500 non-perishable food packages containing rice, sugar, flour, salt, oil and dry pasta. The staff and volunteers of the member organisations of the Board will continuously deliver these parcels to the families in Debrecen before the holiday. László Papp also thanked the work of these colleagues and volunteers, as well as the support of the staff of the Family and Child Welfare Centre of the DMJV, and wished everyone a blessed Easter holiday.

Echoing the latter sentiment, Deputy Mayor and Co-chair of the Debrecen Charity Board Diána Széles emphasised that Debrecen would not be a caring city if there were not so many partners to support this work. The aim of the Charity Board is not to help once, but to help always. She also thanked the staff of the DMJV Family and Child Welfare Centre for the high quality of their work.

President of the Debrecen Charity Board András Törő drew attention to the fact that the Board traditionally tries to make the major holidays more beautiful, to help everyone celebrate in a more dignified, deeper and better way. The feast of Easter is preceded by a period of fasting preparation in Christian culture, and one of the very important aspects of this fasting is the willingness to do good deeds, to help others, to reach out to others.

“It is important to notice the Creator in this process, to notice ourselves, and it is also very important to notice the other person, ” András Törő said adding that he believes that these packages not only have a tangible value, but also a symbolic message.

“These parcels are mostly made up of donations, with the help of the city and through joint voluntary work. These donations are made with the love of all those who have contributed in some way to their creation. They don’t know exactly who they are making these packages for or exactly where they are going, but what they do, they do with a truly good heart,” he said.

The Municipality of Debrecen has allocated a total of HUF 15 million in this year’s budget to support the charitable activities of the Debrecen Charity Board.
