Children today get very little exercise. This fact is confirmed by the results of school health screening tests conducted by the Debrecen Primary Care and Health Promotion Institute (DAEFI). The school programme of the “Move, Debrecen!” movement hopes that their physical activity sessions will make children more courageous and confident in all forms of physical activity.

The results of the school health screening tests carried out by the Debrecen Primary Care and Health Promotion Institute (DAEFI) at the Pósa Street Centre will be made available to all parents for their children.

At the beginning of the new school year, in the primary schools of Debrecen that have joined the “Move Debrecen!” school programme, class teachers will ask parents to check the content of the “Certificate of the Performance and results of the basic screening by the public health nurse and the doctor” that they have received specifically concerning their child’s health. In this document, the school doctor assesses the child’s physical, mental and developmental state and, in the event of a problem, recommends to the parents that a specialist examination be carried out, accompanied by a referral letter.

If, in this document, the school doctor prescribes active movement or physiotherapy for a musculoskeletal problem, it is recommended that the child participates in the free school programme of the “Move, Debrecen!” movement. It is now being launched with the support of the Municipality of Debrecen in cooperation with the Debrecen Sports Centre, DAEFI and all Debrecen school boards.

As the first step of the “Move Debrecen!” school programme, primary school pupils in grades 1-6 will have the opportunity to participate in light, playful, movement development sessions of 2×45 minutes per week at their school. Parents can register their child’s participation in the program through the CREDIT system by sending a consent form to the class teacher, which will start on the 1st of October. If parents cannot find a certificate confirming their child’s participation in the screening programme, a copy can be requested from the school nurse.

The light movement development sessions will be led by the teachers working in the school as school coordinators in the afternoon sessions in each child’s own school, with professional help, recommendations and ideas from the Move, Debrecen!

The “Move, Debrecen!” movement hopes that these activities will make children more courageous and confident in all kinds of physical activity.

The “Move, Debrecen!” school programme has already been joined by secondary education institutions – the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre (DSZC), the International School of Debrecen (ISD) and the EURO Baptist Bilingual Secondary Grammar School and Secondary Technical School.
