The first direct flight to Istanbul took off on Sunday. Wizz Air now flies twice a week from Istanbul to Turkey’s largest city. Some with smaller, some with larger suitcases, waited patiently to be checked in at Debrecen Internatioanl Airport to board the first flight to Istanbul. For some, the day was special for more than just the journey.

Not only the people of Debrecen took the first flight to Istanbul, many passengers from other towns in the wider region, such as Oradea, also arrived. The launch of a direct scheduled Wizz Air flight to Turkey’s largest city marks another milestone in the life of the airport.

“The flight to Istanbul is a completely new destination, which was not offered before. This city, like the Rome flight, was previously in the top 3 most requested destinations. The day has come when we can welcome the passengers of the first flight to Istanbul,” Managing Director of Debrecen International Airport Ltd. Tamás Király said.

From now on there will be two flights a week, on Wednesday and Sunday, from Debrecen to Istanbul.

Debrecen is an important base for Wizz Air. The airline currently offers 11 destinations from the city.

“For years, the travelling public in Debrecen and the region has been longing for a direct flight from Debrecen to Istanbul. I think we can be very happy that we have managed to fulfil this dream,” Senior Marketing Manager of Wizz Air Zsuzsa Trubek said.

The air connection between Istanbul and Debrecen, located on the border of Europe and Asia, is beneficial for the city of the Cívis from both a touristic and economic point of view.

“Connection and connectivity are very important today in economic life and in tourism. In today’s crisis-filled world, the world around us is changing so quickly that we have to react to it in order to make Debrecen’s economy and tourism crisis-proof. That is why Debrecen International Airport must serve as many destinations as possible,” Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Diána Széles emphasised.

Once the almost 170 passengers had taken their seats, the first flight from Debrecen to Istanbul took off at noon on Sunday.
