The rules do not allow the reunification or settlement of guest workers.
The Hungarian Parliament recently passed a new, stricter law on the employment of guest workers.
The government intends to limit the number of guest workers coming to Hungary to the number of vacancies. Moreover, guest workers can only be employed in jobs which, although attempts have been made to fill them with Hungarian workers, have failed.
As of November, a recently adopted law stipulates that the residence permit of guest workers can be valid for a maximum of two years, renewable under conditions set by law.
According to Albert Vitos, a recruitment specialist at the HSA Group in Debrecen, there are several international companies in and around Debrecen where investment or production has already started. In many cases, workers are brought from the mainland to set up and start production and transfer their skills. Most of them then leave the country.
The expert said that hundreds of local firms are interested in foreign workers. In Hungary, the number of workers from third countries is estimated at between 80,000 and 100,000.
