“The funds earmarked for the development of Hungarian agriculture will provide more help than ever before to rural development and farmers,” the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture said at the opening of the 33rd Farmer Expo on Thursday.

One of Hungary’s most important agricultural events will be open to the public for three days this year. The experts stressed that the preservation of the sovereignty of Hungarian agriculture, as well as competitiveness and quality issues will be important aspects of this year’s round table discussions. For three days the 33rd Farmer Expo opened its doors at the Böszörményi Road campus on five thousand square metres with two hundred exhibitors. The main theme of this year’s event is knowledge transfer. The aim of the organisers is to provide farmers with useful information that will help them to further strengthen the competitiveness of the sector through presentations and exchanges.

“The Farmer Expo has no other job than to reflect the changes and try to find answers to whether there are possible ways out of the current situations or what ways out are possible,” exhibition director László Vaszkó said.

The University of Debrecen is also actively involved in the joint thinking this year, with the help of the research institute introducing visitors to the technology of pathogen de-pathogenisation.

“The University of Debrecen is perhaps for the first time in the history of the Farmer Expo able to participate and be an  active participant  providing agriculture with a unique technology that all livestock farmers need,” Rector of the University of Debrecen  Zoltán Szilvássy said.

“In Hajdú-Bihar county more than 106 thousand people are employed in agricultural enterprises, and the sector’s turnover exceeds HUF 5,000 billion. Around 70 percent of this turnover is linked to Debrecen, “ Mayor László Papp pointed out.

“Even in the midst of economic transformation, we must maintain and even increase the weight of our agriculture, so that, by further expanding its complexity and widening its opportunities, it not only keeps pace with the times, but is the sector that is able, in a sense, to dictate the pace of development. Our city is committed to the success of this sector. We have been able to implement a number of forward-looking developments in recent years,” László Papp highlighted..

Vice President of the National Assembly, István Jakab emphasised that the relationship between the city and the university could be an example for Hungarian education. “Local scientists are able to conduct high quality research on a range of issues, the latest challenge being climate change. I think that Hungarian agricultural education, Hungarian agricultural research, Hungarian agricultural experts, Hungarian farmers are working at the level, they are trained to such a level that they are able to implement almost everything that is necessary to compete in the world competition today”, István Jakab explained.

Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture,Sándor Farkas in his welcome speech stressed that in the period of the Common Agricultural Policy until 2027, the resources earmarked for the development of Hungarian agriculture would provide greater support than ever before for rural development, farmers and food processors.

“Almost HUF 2 900 billion of the total budget will be earmarked for rural development. The most important development priority is to strengthen resource-efficient, high value-added agriculture and the food industry,” Sándor Farkas said.

The  33rd Farmer Expo International Agriculture and Food Exhibition is open until Saturday.
