Under the D2030 programme, major renovation works in Debrecen will continue in 2024, as in previous years. The primary aim is to replace ageing and deteriorated asphalt pavements and, where necessary, to improve the local structural condition of the road surface to improve traffic quality and safety. The ongoing works were presented by Mayor László Papp, and Ibolya Aurélia Orosz and András Varga, members of the 2024 Municipal Council, on the 18th of March 2024.
Mayor László Papp said that the intensive transport development programme started in previous years will be continued this year. This year, 57 road sections will be affected by road rehabilitation or construction works. He added this year’s budget provides nearly HUF 1.7 billion for large-scale asphalting..
The Mayor said that the improvement of the roads in Tócóskert and Tócóvölgy has been a priority in the past period, with the reconstruction of the junction at Derék Street, the reconstruction of the section of Kishegyesi Road near the motorway and the reconstruction of another section of István Road and Kishegyesi Road.
Municipal representative Ibolya Aurélia Orosz said that this section of István Road was in need of significant renovation, and the municipal representatives concerned had received numerous reports from residents, which is why it is a great pleasure that the renovation of this section of the road has begun, which will allow easier, faster and safer traffic for those travelling here.
Municipal representative András Varga emphasised the importance of the ongoing renewal of the internal service roads and parking lots, and highlighted that the reconstruction of another section of Kishegyesi road is an important measure to improve traffic safety.
At present, large-scale asphalting and Street works are underway in 18 locations across the city:

István Road (section between Kristály Street and Holló László Promenade)
The large-scale road reconstruction of István Road (the section between Kristály Street and Holló László Promenade) started on the 21st of February 2024 (Wednesday) with the installation of temporary traffic engineering equipment and the parallel local kerb replacement.
The project will involve top layer milling of the worn asphalt on the 20th of March 2024, lower asphalt paving on the 21st of March 2024, levelling of utility fittings on the 22nd and the 23rd of March 2024 and laying of the new asphalt top layer on the 25th and the 26th of March 2024.
Depending on weather conditions the works will take 5 weeks and are expected to be completed by the 28th of March 2024.
The municipality will provide a gross budget of HUF 40 000 000 for the reconstruction of the road section.
Kishegyesi Road (the section between Vág Street and István Street)
The large-scale resurfacing of Kishegyesi Road (section between Vág Street and István Street) started on the 21st of February 2024 (Wednesday) with the installation of temporary traffic engineering equipment and, in parallel, local kerb replacement.
During the works, the worn asphalt top layer will be milled off and the new asphalt top layer will be laid. The contractor will also replace the local track structure and level the utility assemblies during the construction.
The works will take 8 weeks, depending on weather conditions, and are expected to be completed by the 17th of April 2024, but the contractor will do its utmost to complete them as soon as possible.
For the reconstruction of the road section, the municipality will provide a gross budget of 180.000.000 HUF.
