The details were presented at a press conference held on the 8th of September 2023 by Mayor of Debrecen László Papp, and Erzsébet Katona, the municipal representative of the area.
“The economic situation of Debrecen and government subsidies allow the municipality to spend a particularly large amount of money this year and next year on the renovation of the city’s ageing road sections”, László Papp said, who stressed that the works started in the second phase of this year’s large-scale road repairs have already been completed in two locations, including Sumen Street, and traffic is now unhindered in these places.
Szabó Lőrinc Street is one of the busiest residential areas in the western part of the city. It is used not only by passenger traffic but also by public transport. It has been possible to organise this renovation programme to completely renew the ageing pavement sections here.
Work started on Szabó Lőrinc Street on the 6th of September, and asphalt is currently being laid at the roundabout at the mouth of Babits Mihály Street. After that, the section between the roundabout and Szabó Lőrinc Street 3 will be resurfaced. “This is because the reconstruction of the junction of Szabó Lőrinc Street – Csigekert Street – Füredi Road, which was included in the government decision of 19th July, will start at the end of the current works,” László Papp emphasised.
After that, between the roundabout and Bay Zoltán Street, and finally between 35-55 Károli Gáspár Street, the road will be resurfaced with new asphalt, the mayor said. In the latter area, the asphalt layer and the road structure will be renewed.
The investment will renew about 700 metres of road surface at a total cost of nearly HUF 150 million.
Referring to the Szabó Lőrinc Street project, Erzsébet Katona, a local government representative, said that this area is one of the gates of the district, which they are trying to open wider and wider for both residents and passers-by. For example, the previously built Domokos Márton Road helps to bypass traffic coming from Józsa or Hajdúböszörmény towards the motorway. “A section of Ormós Lajos Street will soon be renewed in this part of the town, a car park will be built next to the kindergarten in Kismacs, and works are also planned in Ondód,” she concluded.
