Large-scale road repairs continue in the city as part of the Debrecen 2030 programme.

The primary aim of these is to replace ageing and deteriorated asphalt pavements and, where necessary, to improve the structural condition of the road surface to improve traffic quality and safety.

On Monday, 11 September 2023, following the morning rush hour, the road rehabilitation of Segner Square between Kishegyesi Road and Hatvan Street started.

Csaba Papp, the district’s municipal representative, held a press conference on the project on the spot.

As he recalled, among other things, the four-lane Segner Square and Pesti Street were completed in September 1999. The section of road to be reconstructed has been serving road users since then, and is therefore ripe for reconstruction. The city council has earmarked HUF 120 million to carry out the works. The MEP urged road users to avoid this section of the road for the time being and use the Western bypass (Nagy Imre Street – Tisza István Street – Antall József Street) instead.

Those who are not able to avoid Segner Square should drive with great caution and pay attention to the traffic signs when passing through, as they may change daily due to the phasing of the work.

The work is scheduled to last until the end of October, but weather permitting, the contractor will make every effort to ensure that the junction is fully open to traffic as soon as possible.

Csaba Papp also mentioned several recent road improvement projects – such as those on Nyugati Street, Pesti Street, Mester Street, Bethlen Street and the third section of the Western bypass – which have significantly improved traffic conditions in the district. He also mentioned the related cycle path improvements and the creation of a cycling zone, which will significantly increase and make safer the accessibility of the district by bicycle and contribute to the practice of a healthy lifestyle.

The Segner Square junction is an important urban transport hub connecting large residential areas with the city centre. A major road rehabilitation is essential to make the road more comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly.

The reconstruction works started with the partial demolition of the road kerb and the local replacement of the road surface on the downtown side (Hatvan Street), with the closure of the accelerator and the outer straight lane. The works will include the resurfacing of all traffic lanes and intersections, covering a total of around 3,500 square metres, and the complete reconstruction of the bus stop on the Segner Square side of the road towards Tócóskert (the “Nyugati utca” stop). During this period, buses will stop temporarily at designated locations.
