The artist, who died in 2001 and was closely linked to Debrecen, painted thousands of pictures.
The Centenary Lifetime Achievement Exhibition “Sheafs are Dancing—Imre Égerházi 100” opened on Saturday at MODEM. The “painter of quiet contemplation” moved to Debrecen as a small child in the early 1930s, where he later studied at the fine arts free school. His characteristic motifs and themes include the landscapes of the Great Plain and the Hajdúság, but an atmosphere of sacredness and profound contemplation also runs through his works.
An exhibition of his rich oeuvre is now open at MODEM, where visitors can see his characteristic themes and unique technical solutions. Égerházi’s series of nine paintings based on his near-death experiences was also given a separate room at the exhibition.
Mayor László Papp said at the opening of the exhibition that Égerházi’s paintings can evoke experiences in us that connect us to the homeland, Debrecen, and the landscapes of the Hajdúság. “The message of this is that Debrecen is proud of and appreciates those artists whose lives have been significantly, or even entirely, linked to the city,” László Papp emphasised.
