More than 100 foreigners learnt Hungarian at the Debrecen Summer University

The Summer University’s end-of-course exam was taken by both newcomers to the second fortnight and those who have been here for a month, most of them in writing. The tests, set by the teachers, cover the grammar and vocabulary taught, both of which the students have mastered with excellence. 50 students passed their exams on the final day of the Debrecen Summer University, as reported on the website of the University of Debrecen.

Besides the classes, the foreigners also enjoyed the other activities. A new addition to the programme was a visit to the Szeredás Porta in Sáránd, where they made their own “kalács” (scones) and rolled their own “snail dough” (special soup noodles) , and then sang Hungarian folk songs together. The programme was a great success and is likely to remain in the longer term.

Also a new and also successful element was the visit to Tímárház (crafts house in Debrecen), where they could felt and try their hand at clay pots making.

As the aim of the course is not only to learn the Hungarian language but also culture, this year the students were also able to visit the museums, library and collections of the Reformed College. The old school’s furnishings, furniture and valuable books impressed the visitors. And the evening sightseeing tour is a programme that has attracted more and more students for years, with more and more of them coming to see István Rácz’s guided tours week after week this summer.

The excursion to Hortobágy was designed to be interactive, so students could try everything from mucking out horses to driving through the wilderness to animal shows.

They got to see how the hoop whip is made, had slambuc (traditional Hungarian dish made in a kettle)  for lunch and were entertained by the foal show.

More than 100 people learned Hungarian in Debrecen in a month, and the students of the Summer University heroically overcame the obstacles, among which the heat, often close to 40 degrees, was clearly the biggest problem.
