Japanese ornamental cherries, silver linden, early maple and horse chestnut were planted on Thursday around the Lake on Vezér Street. As a result of the action, the area around the Liget housing estate is becoming even greener.

The programme to plant another 10,000 trees was launched in Debrecen this year and is ongoing in various parts of the city. Earlier, the city’s residents could vote on what environmental and welfare measures they would like to see, with tree planting receiving the most votes.

Erzsébet Katona, the district’s local representative, said the aim was to make one of Debrecen’s newest recreational areas even greener.

“I think it’s very gratifying because our district can be part of the Civaqua programme, and the reservoir that has been created here, which the residents call Lake Vezér, has created a small community space that we want as many people as possible to be able to use,” Erzsébet Katona said.
