The news was announced at a press conference by Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen and Municipal Representative of the area Lajos Barcsa, Director of the Debrecen Institute for Primary Care and Health Promotion (Daefi) Csaba Papp, and  Head of the School Erika Pallósné Bodnár on the 3rd of  April 2024.

Diána Széles was delighted to announce the launch of the new Move, Debrecen! programme, which will provide free exercise for the people of Debrecen. She said that the aim of the whole movement is to give those who do not exercise the opportunity to do so regularly, and thus to do something for their health. They can get all the help they need, including from volunteers or from the Debrecen School District Centre. She added that the programmes are very popular, with many people coming to them with ideas or requests for new venues. In the last two and a half years of the initiative, more than 64,000 people have taken part, which is a huge number and shows the demand for these programmes. This is due to the very broad spectrum of target groups they can serve.

The Deputy Mayor pointed out that all the programmes of the Move Debrecen! Movement are free of charge for the people of Debrecen, but of course there are costs as well, which are covered by the city’s budget. This year, the budget was able to allocate nearly HUF 200 million for this purpose. And this cost also covers the school programme and the programmes open to all. Diána Széles emphasised that they are always monitoring the needs, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that it is necessary to expand the number of program locations in downtown schools, which is why the expansion of the Vénkert locations was initiated at the request of Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa, the municipal representative of the district. Then she thanked the cooperation of the Debrecen School District Centre and the Head of the Dózsa György Primary School for providing the opportunity for the new programme venue, as it can accommodate all needs of the participants.

Deputy Mayor of Debrecen and Municipal Representative of the area Lajos Barcsa emphasised that the “Move Debrecen!” health initiative was a huge success in Vénkert, as 400 people took part in the sessions at Vénkert Primary School in less than a month. He confirmed that there is a huge demand for these programs in the city centre, since in addition to being preventive and health-preserving, regular exercise also has a general well-being-improving effect. Lajos Barcsa said that’s why he is proud of the program series of the “Move Debrecen!” health initiative because we need healthy people from Debrecen who feel good, and the movement started with the support of the municipality has a role in this.

Director of the Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion (Daefi) Csaba Papp highlighted that  Dózsa György Primary School is now the 13th venue of the “Move Debrecen!” health initiative. He said that in two and a half years, nearly 3,000 programmes had been organised, with more than 64,000 participants. This includes programmes that involve 3-4 people, but also programmes that can involve hundreds of people. He thanked the University of Debrecen for its cooperation, as the physiotherapists and specialists participating in the programme are all employees of the University. There are very few programmes of this kind in the country that are backed by a university. He also expressed his hope as the representative of the municipality related to the district, the hope that the residents of the Libakert  would be able to get involved in the programmes.

Speaking about the sessions, Csaba Papp said that classic programmes would be available, namely yoga and back exercises on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m., and body shaping aerobics on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  and Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but if necessary, the options would be further extended.

The Head of Dózsa György Primary School Erika Pallósné Bodnár said that they are very happy to provide a venue for the sessions, as their school was one of the first to join the Move Debrecen! school programme, which is very popular among the students based on the feedback. The Head of the Institution is confident that they will be good hosts for this programme and that colleagues will join in.
