Mayor László Papp shared on his Facebook page that negotiations are underway to renovate Debrecen’s iconic building adding that the hotel, which is located in the heart of the city centre, will be renovated in line with the style of the old, classical part of the building, fulfilling both an educational and a hotel function.
In May 2021, it was announced that the then 25-year-old Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), a talent management school, had purchased Hotel Aranybika and since then had established its training centre in the building. The MCC is planning to renovate and partially rebuild the hotel.
It is planned to first demolish the socialist wing and to replace it with a building to house MCC students and professional activities. Once this is completed, the training courses will move in, thus vacating the old wing and starting the reconstruction of the monument. The old part of the building will once again be used as a hotel after the renovation.
The first step in the preparation process was an open, national architectural design competition. The result was announced in the autumn of 2022 and the winner was Napur Architects. Their plan is to double the old wing, so that Hotel Aranybika would have a unified image. Architect and owner-manager of Napur Architects, Marcel Ferencz told Dehir that he had finished what Alfred Hajós had started a hundred years ago.
The Mathias Corvinus Collegium told Dehir.hu earlier that the design is expected to take two years.
