The city leaders discussed the next steps of the CATL project with Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Vice-President of CATL.

Levente Magyar, parliamentary state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, previously announced that the Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world’s largest battery manufacturer, is to build its second European factory in Debrecen at a cost of around HUF 3 trillion.

The factory in Debrecen will be CATL’s second battery factory in Europe after the one in Germany. It will be built on a 221-hectare site and will create around 9,000 new jobs in Hungary.

László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, said that discussions had started with Minister Szijjártó and CATL’s vice-president on the next steps of the project.

Debrecen will be an important base for future industries, such as energy storage, the mayor said.
