The vehicle is unique in that it has an additional range-enhancing fuel cell, so it can travel almost twice the distance of a conventional electric articulated bus. The Mercedes-Benz hydrogen bus will be tested in Debrecen until the 5th of November.
A hydrogen bus was on the streets of the city on Monday. In the early afternoon, passengers were allowed to travel on bus line 13 to Pallag.
In a pilot project for HUMDA, a hydrogen-cell bus was tested in the city in January and ran for a month. The vehicle ran 4,000 kilometres in the city, with Debrecen being the first of the rural towns to start the test run.
The latest Mercedes-Benz hydrogen bus arrived in Debrecen last Friday. This fuel cell vehicle is similar to its electric counterpart. Its special feature is that it has an additional range-enhancing fuel cell.
“ Instead of having an electric articulated bus, we now have a bus with a range of up to one and a half or even twice that, according to the factory specifications. Now in terms of numbers, that would mean that instead of the more pessimistic 200 kilometres, it could go up to 400 kilometres,” Director of innovation and service development at DKV PLC László Mátyus pointed out.
The zero-emission bus will be in town until the 5th of November. Until then, passengers can try the vehicle for free on various lines.
