In the western quarter of Debrecen, the Kápolnási Street Synagogue stands as an enduring emblem of heritage, faith, and renewal. Completed in the autumn of 1910, it was built at a time when the city’s Jewish community had outgrown its existing house of worship, and residents in the western neighborhoods needed a synagogue closer to home.
Designed by the László brothers, architects from Budapest, it combines modern exterior sensibilities with structural and decorative touches drawn from Byzantine influence—making it unique in both appearance and essence. Local master builder Lajos Erdődi oversaw its construction, working alongside skilled artisans of Debrecen. Capable of accommodating some six hundred worshipers, the synagogue’s inauguration on September 22, 1910, was a cause for communal celebration, as it represented both spiritual growth and cultural identity.
Over the decades, its role has shifted and expanded. Originally used regularly for worship, school functions, and community life, today it comes alive especially during the high Jewish holidays, weddings, concerts, and various cultural events. Recognized as a historic monument by Hungary’s heritage authorities, the synagogue was the subject of significant restoration in the early 2010s. Its roof, structure, facades, and interior painting were renewed, and in September 2014 the refurbished building was again opened, its dignity restored.
The Kápolnási Street Synagogue invites all who enter not only to recall a century of Jewish life in Debrecen, but also to experience an architectural and spiritual sanctuary. It is a place where memories endure, where faith is observed, where community gathers, and where culture and tradition continue to flourish.
