Throughout their more than 160 years of history in Hungary, Cooperative Credit Institutions have always been among the key players in the Hungarian banking system. After several transformations, the predecessors of modern savings cooperatives were established in the 1950s. The change of regime brought a significant change to the sector, as the savings cooperatives established their central bank, TakarékBank (now MTB Zrt.), through banking market consolidation. Intending to strengthen their market position and centrally support their business activities, a strategic cooperation was established between the 3 banking groups (MTB, MKB Bank Budapest Bank) in May 2020, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a joint financial holding company (Magyar Bankholding Zrt.).
