Two closed post offices reopened in January in Debrecen

Due to the energy crisis,  Hungarian Post (Magyar Posta Zrt.) decided to temporarily suspend the operation of 366 post offices in 210 municipalities across the country-  This affected twelve units in Debrecen.

Mayor of Debrecen László Papp initiated negotiations with the CEO of the Hungarian Post, and it was decided that the post offices in Jánosi and Galamb streets could reopen at the beginning of January.

The city will contribute a net amount of HUF 65 million to keep the two post offices open until 2023, but as it will probably have to pay for them in 2024, it will cost HUF 124 million over the two years.

The mayor said at the last assembly that he did not think it was normal that the city should have to pay to keep post offices open.

He believes the other closed post offices will not be opened by the  Hungarian Post, so it is necessary to think about postal points. The Hungarian Post is open to this suggestion, but commercial partners must be found.

A post point is not a post office in its own right. It’s usually a section in a grocery store where a postal employee can deal with postal matters.
