Diána Széles and Lajos Barcsa, the district’s deputy mayors, held a press conference on the development on the 28th of November 2024.
Diána Széles, one of the municipal representatives of the district, said that a significant milestone has been reached in the Hatvan Street garden, as the asphalting works long awaited by the residents have been completed on Gohér Street and Délibáb Street. She added that the FIDESZ- KDNP faction had already launched a serious Neighbourhood Development Programme in 2010 to provide more and more resources for improving the locals’s needs.
The Development Programme for the District aims to make investments that will make a difference in the everyday lives of the people of Debrecen so that they can feel that the city is looking after them. Examples include road improvements, pavement and cycle path improvements, and the resolution of drainage problems. In other words, they can help in a wide range of ways to ensure the well-being and better quality of life of a neighbourhood or community,” she said.
Diána Széles reminded us that the Kertség Development Programme is a HUF 4-5 billion item in the city’s budget every year, financed by local taxes, mainly from business tax paid by businesses. In this respect, Debrecen has performed well, with a threefold increase in revenues over 10 years, which can be used for welfare development.
“One of the difficulties in starting road construction and asphalting is that the previous municipal regulations do not allow the necessary road width to carry out road works in the Fészek, Hatvan Street or the Nagysándor Residential Park. The road construction in Derekassy Street, which is currently underway, also waited 12 years before reaching an agreement with all residents so that the project could start with the necessary land subdivisions,” she pointed out.
The deputy mayor stressed that much cooperation is needed to complete a road project. On the one hand, the residents need to work together, the local government needs to work together, and the revenues need to be raised to provide the funds for these developments.
Diána Széles pointed out that the Hatvan Street Residential Park has been gentrified in recent years, with many cases of large-scale property and road development, an increase in the number of cars, and the city’s interest in finding solutions to the changing needs of residents. As a caring city, Debrecen strives to meet all the needs of its citizens.
Lajos Barcsa, the other municipal representative of the district, said that Gohér Street came to his district in the new municipal term and that Diána Széles previously represented this part of the district. He has been very successful in that the asphalting of Gohér Street could have started in previous years. He can now report on the completion of the third phase. The background to this is that he had visited the area several times in the spring when there was wet weather, and he had the opportunity to see that people were not able to travel in comfortable conditions, which is why he felt it was necessary to get the project underway as quickly as possible.
As for the costs, he explained that the construction of the two roads had been financed with a total of HUF 123 million from the municipality. The part of Gohér Street that had not yet been asphalted was 155 metres long, where, in addition to the asphalting, the works also included the construction of stormwater drainage. In the case of Délibáb Street, 82 metres were paved.
Concerning the road improvements in his district, Lajos Barcsa pointed out that more than HUF 500 million had been spent on asphalting works since 2019. For example, he mentioned the renewal of Bezerédj Street, Kis Ernő Street and the service roads in the residential area. He added that the solid economic development of the last 10 years has enabled Debrecen to undertake this kind of intensive road improvement.
