“Ryanair has serious plans for the Hungarian market,” the low-cost airline’s Commercial Director, Jason McGuinness, said at a press conference in Budapest on Tuesday.

According to the Irish company, it is the fastest growing airline in the country and expects the 2025 summer season in Budapest to beat all previous records. Világgazdaság  reports that their long-term plans now include not only Budapest, but also Debrecen and Lake Balaton.

The latter two locations are to be added to the offer by 2030 at the latest. This already means 16 base aircraft and 180 new, highly paid employees, which would bring the total number of employees in Hungary to 480.

Mayor László Papp said at the December assembly that after Wizz Air significantly reduced the number of flights to Debrecen due to its own capacity problems, the municipality and the majority owner of the airport, the Ministry of National Economy, are working to expand the destinations.

Currently travellers can fly from Debrecen to London with Wizz Air and to Munich with Lufthansa. It has recently been announced that the German airline will fly five times a week between Debrecen and Munich from April instead of three times a week. Wizz Air will restart its service to Cyprus in three weeks.

In the summer, there will also be charter flights to Barcelona in Spain, Tirana in Albania, Antalya in Turkey, Monastir in Tunisia and Heraklion on the island of Crete in Greece.

Press reports have also emerged that Israel’s Israir plans to launch a Debrecen-Tel-Aviv flight at the end of April, but this destination has not yet appeared in the airline’s booking system.
