School health screenings are popular, with around 100-110 students screened daily at the Pósa Street Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion (Abbreviated in Hungarian as DAEFI). The programme will continue this school year, with lectures and classes running alongside existing screenings and measurements, building on last year’s results. The initiative is so popular that it is expected to be extended to the county level within a year.
For young people, various physical and mental health classes and prevention lectures are also organized around health status and current trends. For example, last year’s survey showed that almost 16% of the students measured were overweight.
“Seeing last year’s results in the area of obesity, we have unfortunately moved forward, and so we want to focus even more on lifestyle change with even more focus and attention,” Director of DAEFI Csaba Papp emphasised.
In Debrecen, more than 13 thousand students were screened last year.
“Besides screening, there is a psychological and physical education and information programme. Over the past five years, it has been clear that the screening results in Debrecen have been outstanding; we are much above the national average,” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised.
The five-year-old programme is unique not only in the region but also nationally. Therefore, it is not surprising that requests for screenings are coming from other municipalities in the county.
“Thanks to the cooperation with UNICEF, we can launch a major development in the adjacent building, which will create the possibility of extending DAEFI’s screening programmes to the whole county,” Mayor László Papp informed.
The school health screening programmes in the surrounding municipalities are expected to start as early as this school year, or next school year at the latest.
