In accordance with the new city management concept launched by the Municipality of Debrecen in 2019, the municipality provides more and more resources for the maintenance and management of the city’s green spaces, public areas, and parks every year.
The works were reported at a press conference by Viktor Papp, municipal councilor and head of the Fidesz-KDNP parliamentary group in the Debrecen assembly, and Attila Csaholczi, municipal councilor, on 14th of March 2023.
In line with the new city management concept launched in 2019 and the traditions of recent years, the spring clean-up program was launched again this year in Debrecen’s public spaces, along public transport routes, in residential areas, playgrounds, fitness parks, the city center, and the Great Forest, with the aim of making the city’s public spaces cleaner, tidier and more homely.
In recent years, the Green Cities Programme has renewed 260,000 square meters of quality green space in the city, and of course, this has been included in the spring clean-up, Viktor Papp said. He stressed the importance of cleaning playgrounds, where it is necessary to wash and disinfect playground equipment, refresh sandpits, and grind up and replace sand in order to ensure the health and safety of families with young children.

A good example of this process is the significant amount of HUF 1.7 billion available for this purpose again this year. The costs of the spring clean-up are, of course, only part of this amount. The clean-up started in mid-March and weather permitting is expected to be completed in April. Naturally, both the municipality and the contractors carrying out the work are working on completing the spring clean-up as soon as possible.
For example, there is the tidying up of biennial flowerbeds, the preparation of annual flowerbeds for planting, pruning, cleaning bus stops, and cleaning pavements and roads with large and small machines – a complex activity that makes Debrecen’s public spaces cleaner and tidier.
Attila Csaholczi, the municipal representative of the Tócóvölgy district, stressed that ten playgrounds had been built or renovated in this area under the Green City Programme. During the spring clean-up, the playground equipment and benches are disinfected, the sandpits are filled, and the sand in them is loosened. The green areas along the roads are also being tidied up by removing overhanging branches and pruning trees. Cleaning up the city is like cleaning up a home, and just as we keep the family home clean, so too must the community that lives here keep the city clean.
