The 97th Debrecen Summer University has begun. More than 100 students from 30 countries from all over the world came to study Hungarian language, culture and history. Many students are using the training this year as well with scholarships.
The youngest student is 15, the oldest 85 at the Debrecen Summer University. Students from 30 countries come to study Hungarian from beginner to advanced level.
“The role of the Summer University is constantly changing, it was different in the post-Trianon era, in the period of emigration in the 1950s and now, when the institution has almost 8,000 foreign students. The students who come here can take away the good news of what kind of education and what kind of life awaits those who apply here, ” Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of the University of Debrecen, László Csernoch said at the opening ceremony.
“The concept of the summer university is to create the opportunity for non-Hungarians to study Hungarian and get to know Hungarian culture,” he added.
More and more students are coming to the programme at their own expense. Scholarships have now been provided for 45 students and the city government is also providing support.
“The Summer University, which is now almost a century old, is an important element in the relationship between Debrecen and the world, ” Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, István Puskás said.
“Students attending the Summer University are also important for Debrecen in that they not only learn about the Hungarian language and culture, but also about the city, and they bring the city’s reputation to the world, ” we heard István Puskás say.
The Summer University of Debrecen is not only an educational institution, but also offers a wide range of cultural activities.
