850 tonnes of road grit, salt and sand are in huge stockpiles at AKSD’s István Road site, and more will be stockpiled if needed during the winter.

Large vehicles equipped with snow ploughs and spreaders are also on standby to be dispatched at any time of the day on the municipality’s order. From now on, the condition of city-maintained roads will be monitored continuously for five months.

“We need to be prepared for this period, so ten large machines are waiting to be deployed on Debrecen’s roads whenever necessary. We have thirty-five drivers on standby, plus five additional work supervisors,” spokesperson for AKSD Ltd. Csilla Domokos said.

Another of the municipality’s contracted partners, Uunisol, has 13 specialised small machines on standby at its Vágóhíd Street site. They will be deployed within an hour of a signal from the mayor’s office to ensure accessibility to exposed areas in times of snow or ice, with a view to protecting nature.

“Environmentally friendly, chlorine-free material is used in the protected tree environment, and normal salting material is also used during desilting work, “Deputy Head of the Urban Development Department Tibor Schwarcz said.

According to a municipal decree, property owners in Debrecen have to ensure that the pavement in front of their property is de-sanded. Experience shows that city residents typically do this in times of snow and frost.
