The government has set the development of Debrecen International Airport, Pécs-Pogány Airport, Győr-Pér Airport, Hévíz-Balaton International Airport and Békéscsaba Airport as national strategic objectives to promote Hungary’s regional development and foreign economic objectives and to boost the competitiveness of each Hungarian region.

According to the Government, feasibility studies are needed to exploit the potential of airports in terms of their spatial and economic development functions. The government has asked the finance minister to allocate HUF 92 million from this year’s budget for the studies.

It is known that the municipality and the majority owner of the company operating the airport, the Hungarian state, are considering major developments in Debrecen. Among other things, they plan to build a new runway and a new terminal.

A design competition for this was launched previously and won by BORD Architect Studio.

Wizz Air operates flights from Debrecen to London, Tel Aviv, Eindhoven and Cyprus, while Lufthansa flies to Munich. Wizz Air will soon operate three summer seasonal flights to Burgas in Bulgaria, Antalya in Turkey and Corfu in Greece. Charter flights also fly to Crete and Antalya from Debrecen this summer.
